Qualifying for Medicare Home Health Services

To be eligible for Medicare home health services, clients must meet the following criteria:

  1. Homebound Status: The client must be homebound, meaning it’s difficult for them to leave their home without assistance due to their health condition.

  2. Need for Skilled Care: The client must require skilled nursing, physical therapy, or speech-language pathology services. If occupational therapy is the only service needed, it must follow one of the initial skilled services.

  3. Physician’s Order: A physician must order the home health services, and they must certify that the patient requires these services. The physician will also be involved in developing and overseeing the care plan.

  4. Intermittent Care Requirement: The need for care must be intermittent, meaning it’s not round-the-clock or custodial care.
